Interventional procedures
Interventional procedures performed in the department include:

  • Imaging Guided Biopsies and Drainages,
  • Angiograms
  • Insertion of venous access devices such as PICC lines and Arm ports.

Most of these procedures require blood tests to be performed prior to the day of procedure and a fasting period on the day. Most routine medications should still be taken but if you are on blood thinners these may need to be withheld. Please contact the Radiology department if you are unsure regarding patient preparation.

A booked procedure in Radiology may require admission to the Peri-operative Day Procedure Unit, where pre-procedure observations will be recorded. From there the patient will be transferred to Radiology where a radiologist will explain the procedure and a consent form will be signed. Radiology nursing staff will provide care whilst in the department.

Most procedures are performed using local anaesthetic, however light sedation may be used depending on the type of procedure undertaken.

Some procedures such as angioplasties may require an overnight stay in hospital. Please don’t hesitate to call the Radiology nursing staff on 5320 4478 if you have any questions or queries.

Special Considerations for patients with Renal Insufficiency or Failure:

The renal insufficiency and contrast media protocol is indicated in patients with serum creatine >130 or eGFR<60mls/hr. Please contact the Radiology department (03 5320 4270) if you have any questions or alternatively follow the link below.
